For many centuries, the area of Porreras (Porreres) owned its wealth to agriculture.Today it offers a rural tranquillity in traditional surroundings. The soil here is of excellent quality and perfect for growing grain and vine-grapes. Porreras is also renowned for growing apricots. The mares (Mallorcan stone) and other types of stone are the typical symbols of this village. They have become ever more important since the decrease of the agricultural sector.
The specialities produced in the area of Porreras are wine and apricots, both fresh and dried (the so-called “orejones”).
Things to see in Porreras:
La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación This church is considered the second most important in Mallorca and is famous for its artwork.
Bodega de Vino Jaume Mesquida This family-run winery produces a variety of wines, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay.
Oratorio de la Madre de Dios de Montisión This oratorio lies on top of the mountain Montisión, which still belongs to Porreras, at about 250 meters above sea level. It was built in gothic style between the 16th and the 17th century.
On the 14th of January 1954, the inhabitants of Porreras worked together to build the 3km long, winding road leading to the oratorio. Thanks to this effort it is possible to access the oratorio by car.
A large staircase leads to the inner court, which is supposed to be the only irregular pentagon on the Island.
The Sunday after Easter, the Pancaritat festival takes place, attracting more visitors than on any other day of the year. On this day, the visitors walk up all the way to the oratorio and celebrate with dances in the cloister. The festival for the patron saint San Roque takes place on the 16th of August. Usually, a fair is held on the last Sunday of October
