Renowned for its Moorish architecture, Tavira is a coastal resort found in the Algarve. Also known as the Venice of Algarve, it lies right across the river Gilao. The ‘Roman’ (but actually Moorish) bridge built in the 12th century, survived the 1755 earthquake and is one of Tavira’s main attractions. The other lures of this quaint Portuguese city are the everyday buildings that line its streets, along with its 37 churches and ancient Moorish castle the battlements of which boast the best views in Tavira.

Vast beaches, wonderful architecture, and a history stretching back way beyond the Romans - Tavira is truly charming.”
Straddling the mouth of the River Gilao, Tavira’s two parts are linked by an old, arched Roman bridge. Small enough to walk from one side of town to the other in 15 minutes, it's still large enough to offer plenty of interest along the way. Starting with a wide choice of shops, bars and restaurants. But there are some great sights too. Climb from the main square up narrow streets to the ruined Moorish castle on top of the hill. Take in fabulous views across the rooftops towards the mansions lining the river. You’ll also spot numerous church towers – with 37 places of worship, it’s little wonder Tavira is sometimes nicknamed the town of churches. Time to eat? Head for the river bank. Most of the restaurants are gathered along the water’s edge or nearby. The riverside is also the site of an early morning fruit and vegetable market. But look out for the larger market on the third Monday of the month. This is the place to bag some delicious caramel confectionery - made in the area, it’s a great tastebud-tingling treat to take home. Delicious.
