Holidays in Mellieha Bay are a must, we recommend the Solana Hotel or the Luna Holiday Complex
Mellieha Bay has a precious Maltese rarity – a sandy beach. And it's the longest one in Malta. Buckets and spades, bikinis and sunnies. Pack your weapons of choice and make a beeline for the soft sand, warm shallow Med and medley of bars that make Ghadira Beach. Enticed into the glittering waves? Pick up a paddle, put on a diving mask or attach yourself in various ways to the back of a speeding boat – it's all about the watersports. This is beach life, Maltese style.
Mellieha Bay unsurprisingly sprang up because of this swathe of sand. And the hotels make the most of it, whether it's the Luna Holiday Complex with its poolside seaviews or the secluded Hotel Mellieha Bay with its private sandy patch. It also means Mellieha Bay's shops sell everything you forgot – beach toys, sun tan lotion and other day-to-day essentials. And the odd trinket to take home.
Even if you're self catering, holidays in Mellieha Bay mean you can eat out every night. Locally caught fish become that night's specials – try some aljotta, a potent garlic, tomato and fish soup. Or perhaps some octopus? Don't worry, pizza, pasta and chips are on more menus than not.
Sun lover and night owl? Like most of Malta, Mellieha Bay is low key but Bugibba is just across the bay with clubs and discos aplenty. Otherwise, get the beers in or uncork that delicious looking local wine and unwind in the evening air.

If your relaxing day has inspired you for something more in the evening, take a taxi to the livelier nightlife of Bugibba or St Julians, about 12 kilometres away. Mellieha Bay is two kilometres north of Mellieha town, is a spacious bay, and one of the most popular attactions in Malta. Good, modern roads lead to the bay, and a number of hotels, tourist villages and apartments are in the vicinity,
The shallow waters and the extensive sand make the beach suitable for families with children. The rocky flanks enclosing Mellieha Bay afford ideal spots for swimming off-the-rocks.
Across the road from the beach, on the inland side, is the Ghadira Nature Reserve - Ghadira means 'Lake'. The depressed tract of land here holds rain water and looks like a tiny lake. The area was enclosed and reserved for wild-life, mostly migrant birds and water-plants. The reserve, sited in an attractive environment was the first one of its kind in Malta. Subsequently other bird reserves have been sited in other localities. Observation posts have been set up in proper places for bird watchers. This nature reserve is open to the public during mornings, making a beautiful attraction for families on a Malta holiday.
