n the location of the modern city lied also the ancient city of Vereniki, an important harbor during the years of the reign of king Pyrros of Ipeiros. The name Preveza is first mentioned in the Byzantine chronicles of Moreas during the 13th century. The city had been under foreign occupation until 1912, when it was embodied in the modern Hellenic state. Preveza is a live city bustling with live and activity. Only a few buildings and sites of the old city still survive, mainly due to the many wars and conflicts, in which the city was constantly engaged. Among other sites, the three Venetian forts of the city, the Byzantine churches of Agios Nikolaos, Agios Charalambos, and Agios Athanasios with their beautiful frescoes and mosaics, and the old Venetian clock of the city, give the visitor a clear impression of the old city. A small distance to the north lies the city of Nikopoli. The city's landmarks and monuments are evidence of the glorious past of the city. The Roman theater and Conservatoire, the six Byzantine churches and cathedrals of the city, decorated by splendid frescoes, mosaics and statues, reveal the significance of the city during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The traveler may also visit the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to gods Apollon, Aris, and Poseidon. Further to the north lies the historic village of Zaloggo. One of the Souli cluster of villages, Zaloggo bares a not only tragic, but also heroic past. As the villages of Souli were being ravaged by the army of Ali Pasha in 1803, the women of Zaloggo embracing their children plunged to their deaths from a high precipice in order not to become prisoners of the Turkish forces. The beautiful and plain memorial commemorated to their memory, reminds the modern traveler of their ultimate sacrifice as well as the eternal struggle of Hellenism for freedom. Freedom not only in body, but also in soul.
