Holidays to Santa Cruz in Tenerife combine a summer holiday with a city break so you get the best of both worlds. Santa Cruz is the capital city of the Western Canary Islands including the Islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Its the second largest city in the Canary Islands after Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.
The City is an important port and historically was used to send all the Bananas, Tomatoes and flowers to the Uk, all of the ships that left Santa Cruz used to dock at Canary Wharf on London's docklands, hence how Canary wharf got its name.
The City today is pretty famous for its amazing beach just outside of the city called Las Terrasitas, probably the best beach on the Island. The Santa Cruz Carnival which takes place every year in February is one of the largest Carnival celebrations in the world and well worth seeing. Museums are in abundance including the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, which has many Guanche Mummy exhibits of the aboriganal people of the Islands, most famously there is a skeleton arm that was amputated from Horatio Nelson after the batle off Santa Cruz in 1791.
Today the city has a vibrant nighlife and eating and drinking are excellent, quite different from the Tenerife tourist areas of the South of the Island.
